“USING SAS CONNECT”, Bill West, PhD

Abstract:

This presentation will provide an introduction to the use of SAS CONNECT, a module that enables the user to link their PC SAS session to a remote host, such as IBM or UNIX, so that programs can be written and submitted in the windows environment to run on data located on the remote host, and to directly upload and download SAS datasets.  The presentation will provide information on modifying and writing SAS script files to establish the electronic link to the remote host and a demonstration of a remote session.

Bio:

Bill is a Research Analyst at Ingenix, Epidemiology Division (formerly ERI - the Epidemiology Research Institute) in Newton MA.  Prior to that he worked as a statistical programmer at the VA Center for Health Care Quality, Outcomes, and Economic Research in Bedford, MA. Bill has used SAS to analyze health care data for over 15 years in various other public and private settings and has a PhD in Social Policy Analysis from the Heller School at Brandeis University.

“AN INTRODUCTION TO MAKING MAPS WITH SAS GRAPH", Michael Zdeb

Abstract:

Maps can be created with SAS using the GMAP procedure, one of the PROCs available within SAS/GRAPH.  Four different map types can be created using GMAP:  choropleth, prism, surface, and block.  This presentation will concentrate on creating choropleth maps, i.e.  "...2-dimensional maps that represent data values as combinations of pattern and color that fill map areas".  A series of examples will introduce you to the basics of map making: map data sets; map projection; fill patterns; text and legend placement. After the basics are covered, additional topics will include using PROC GREMOVE to create new map areas based on current map sets and customizing the output of PROC GMAP using annotate data sets.  Some of the new options in version 8.2 for creating web-based maps will also be discussed.
