For the first meeting of 2005,
we are pleased to present two of the leading names in field of data
mining. Michael Berry and Olivia Parr
Rud have worked in the field from its infancy and are well-known authors of
important books on data mining.
Even without the Enterprise
Miner, many of our ordinary SAS programming techniques can be used for data
mining. Their presentations will delve
into some of these familiar techniques and discuss how they might be used for
data mining applications, although detailed SAS code will not be emphasized.
TOPIC: Programming techniques related to data
mining.

ABSTRACTS AND BIOGRAPHIES:
“Optimize ROI with Lifetime
Value Modeling”, by C. Olivia Parr-Rud
As markets become saturated,
many companies are struggling to stay profitable. As they focus on acquiring
new customers, they must also be concerned about retaining current profit
streams, improving sales and service to existing customers, decreasing exposure
to risk, etc. These goals may vary depending on market pressures, stock ratings
or numerous other factors. And each is important in its own right. But if each
is pursued in isolation, the benefit may be sub-optimal. It is in combination
that they have the power to produce the highest return on investment (ROI). The
key is to define a way to combine them into a single measure, Lifetime Value.
Lifetime Value takes targeting
and measurement to a whole new level. It challenges companies to define their
company profitability in terms of your customers and potential customers, not
just for today, but over a typical life of a customer.
"Modeling Shortcuts Using
SAS", by Olivia Parr Rud
This short talk will offer
techniques to use SAS for model development.
Biography:
Olivia is an internationally
known speaker and the author of “Data Mining Cookbook” (Wiley 2001). She has
over 23 years experience in marketing with a 14-year emphasis in data mining
and statistical analysis for a variety of industries. Using her blend of
analytic skills and creative talents, Olivia provides direction and develops
solutions for her clients in the areas of acquisition, retention, risk and
overall profitability.
To expand her services, Olivia
is working on a Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Development through Fielding
Graduate Institute. She has been working with clients for several years in the
areas of communication, change management, team building and leadership
development.
Olivia is an instructor for SAS
Institute in the Business Knowledge Series. She teaches a 2-day course based on
her book, “Data Mining Cookbook: Modeling Data for Marketing, Risk and Customer
Relationship Management” (Wiley 2001).
She also serves as a faculty member for Data University, an online university
that features experienced database marketing professionals who provide
one-on-one training worldwide via the Internet. She is in the process of
developing a Webinar on predictive modeling.
Olivia has held senior
management positions at Fleet Bank, National Liberty Insurance and Providian
Bancorp.
"Data Mining in
Practice", by Michael Berry
Data mining is often thought of
and taught as a collection of algorithms--neural networks, K-means clustering,
decision trees, and so on. This lecture focuses on the practical application of
these techniques in real business situations. Using examples from several
recent data mining engagements, the talk illustrates some of the obstacles to
successful data mining and shows how they can be overcome.
Biography:
A data mining educator and
consultant, Michael is in demand as a keynote speaker and seminar leader in the
area of data mining generally and the application of data mining to customer
relationship management in particular.
"Mining the Web," the
third book by Michael and his colleague Gordon Linoff, was recently published
by John Wiley & Sons. They also wrote two of the most widely read and
respected books on data mining, "Data Mining Techniques" and
"Mastering Data Mining" (both published by John Wiley & Sons).
Prior to founding Data Miners,
Michael spent 8 years at Thinking Machines Corporation. There he specialized in
the application of massively parallel supercomputing techniques to business and
marketing applications, including one of the largest database marketing systems
of the time. He later ran a data mining laboratory for Naviant Technology
Solutions.
